Are the right people making our laws?
This project is being conducted in partnership with the Industry and Parliament Trust. It aims to assess relations between the business community and the six legislative bodies relevant to the UK: the House of Commons, the House of Lords, the European Parliament, the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Assembly, the Northern Ireland Assembly.
It is a unique piece of research in the sense that it combines a survey of politicians' pre-politics careers with a representative sample of opinion among business leaders. The biographies of 2476 politicians have been examined, and the opinions of 50 business leaders (most from FTSE 100 companies) collected.
The project asks two questions:
1) Is the general level of business expertise and openness acceptable across the six legislatures?
2) How do the legislatures rank on these counts relative to each other?
Early indications suggest that the results will be striking.
